Nothing new to report...

It´s 6:45 am Monday morning. Dad is heavily sedated but has been able to rest since the colonoscopy earlier this morning. He is still on the dialysis and ventilator. I asked his nurse when he might have the ventilator removed and was told ¨not today¨. It is their belief that by breathing for dad it gives him time to rest and allow his body to recover from the struggles from the last few days. They do agree that being on a ventilator is not great but want to allow him to remain stable for the time being. I haven´t seen a doctor come in yet but would think that rounds should begin soon (unless they are off for the holiday). Dad will probably be allowed to sleep most of the day so I will post another update later on tonight. Haverly is coming into town today so the family will be here as long as necessary.

Hang in there Frazier - Years ago my Dad was in the ICU for more than 3 weeks, ended up on dialysis and had every complication I could think of. He made it through and lived more than 20 "extra" healthy years, getting to know my kids. I hope the entire family can get some rest and let your Dad know that I am praying for continued healing.

Consider this: As complex as Dean's surgery was, it was a ‘procedure’ - complete with a structured protocol. Everyone knew, more or less, what was going to happen. His surgical recovery, on the other hand, lacks such structure. Instead it possesses the serendipity of circumstance and human variation. Like all those reading this blog, I sit on the edge of my seat and feel my heart race as I read each chapter of this saga.

As a physician, I can picture the process those consultants are going through, making sure they protect Dean from an adverse event. Nevertheless, all the explanations and diagrams in the world can't succeed in achieving the reassurance one needs when it's a loved one in that bed. That can only come from us, his family and friends.

Thank you again for keeping us in the loop.

We so appreciate your posting to keep us all informed. I hope you can hear our prayers coming all the way from Oregon. Dean is a fortunate man to have so many loved ones surround him while he heals.

Take care of one another,

I am so sorry things haven't been smooth sailing. But I have and definitely will be keeping Dean in my thoughts.
