Saturday Morning

Hi All,

Dad is steadily improving in many areas. His heart has gone back into sinus rhythm which is good. He may be able to come off dialysis today as an initial test. They are going to do a bronchoscopy today to clear out his lungs. They think his original episode where he stopped breathing was the result of gunk coming up from his new lung as it adjusted and they want to make sure that does not happen again.

He did not sleep at all last night which they say is typical in the ICU and had some issues with paranoia. Remind me to tell you those stories when he is better, it definitely made for an interesting night!

Hopefully he can relax some today, he is still breathing like he has his old lung so he needs to retrain himself to breathe easy. They do breathing treatments regularly to help with that. Additionally, his abdominal incision is healing nicely.

We've given him the bare bones of his ordeal over the past several days, we've had various doctors give him an overview, but are trying to ease him into full knowledge of the extent of what happened. As our dear friends the Tofts from Bennett said last night, "he might be out of the woods now, but he was DEFINITELY in them."

I will be returning to Chicago on Monday morning, but we will work to keep the updates going so you all are up to date.

Thanks,
Haverly

Haverly, you've done a remarkable job keeping us all in the loop. Thank you. I know at times it was difficult to know what to say. I am so glad your Dad is improving. I think Larry and Helen hit it on the nail regarding his journey through the woods.
Please give him my best. Safe travels back to Chicago.
Love,
Bonnie (bonzo)

Ah...I remember the post-anesthesia dynamics well. We could not convince my mom that things were fine when she insisted the nurses were not doing what they were supposed to, etc....and don't be surprised if you tell your dad today what has been going on that you'll need to tell that story over and over and over again as his brain and body take their time to purge the effects of the meds he's on....it's a process.....

Glad to know his resilient anatomy is doing its rebound thing yet again! Hugs to all....
