Wednesday Evening

Hi Everyone,

We wanted to let you know that Dad will be going into surgery shortly for an exploratory laparotomy which is essentially an abdominal exploration. The doctors feel that they have waited as long as they can to let his bowels start moving on their own and expel the blockage. Without surgery his colon will almost certainly burst and there is a slim chance of survival in his immuno-suppressed state.

At this point, his left colon is basically dead and no longer functioning. They are not sure about his right colon and may be able to save it but won't know until they get in there. This will most likely result in a colostomy bag which he will have to wear for several months until he is healed enough to reverse that and reattach the necessary pieces.

There are risks involved obviously, mostly having to do with the fact that his blood does not clot as it should at this point due to his liver having taken a hit over the course of the weekend. They will give him platelet transfusions and are giving him clotting medicines as well. Additionally, it's a "dirty" surgery so they will do their best to get to the problem without releasing anything into his body that will cause a potential infection.

Bill, Frazier and my mom are here and we will stay here through the night waiting for news. We have all been in to see him and encourage him that this will be a good move for him. As a family we are confident that this is the best option to get Dad back on track to recovery.

We'll keep you posted as we know more. They expect the surgery to last 1 1/2-3 hours but the operating rooms are currently full so they can't start right away.

We know how difficult waiting can be. But know that we and all those who love you and Dean are with you in heart & spirit. We appreciate the updates, difficult as they must be to write. We'll look forward to the news of Dean's progress tomorrow morning, and can be there 'in a minute' if it will help.

Love Rollie & Richard
