The roller coaster

When I wrote that the rehab phase will be ups and downs, I had no idea the down side would come so quickly. Rehab is dependent on Dean. He has to do it...and most of you know that there is a stubborn side to our friend that can be very irritating. He has to practice his swallowing. No one can do it for him. He wants food and he can't have it until he can swallow.

When the nurses (actually, "murses") tried to stand him up, he said "no" in the middle of them heaving him into a standing position. Fortunately one of the murses said, you can't say no. You have to try. So on the second try, he got into an erect position.

Bill and I went to lunch very rattled. What can we do? Well we figured it out. Every 30 minutes or so, we are directing Dean's exercise. I am the "sarge." Bill does the lifting and pulling. I have him push into my hands. We did it over and over and over. Everytime we are there we will do it. And Dean will get frustrated with us.

But by the end of the day, Dean was snapping his toes! His color was better and he was tired. Day 1 was over. Today, we start again. Linda

Wow Linda & Bill! Your efforts just show how much you love Dean - I'm sure he appreciates your efforts even though he's unable to express it right now. In the meantime, if you need any support, please let us know any way we can help. In spite of it all, from your comments for which we are thankful, he is making progress.

We're thinking of you & please give Dean our love.

Ok...the two of you get an award for your persistence. We know Dean will thank you for this in the future but it can't be easy right now. On the other hand...it might feel good bossing him around for once, so ….enjoy it while you can. When he is able to eat, just be sure to put his food on the other side of the room and he will have to exercise if he wants to eat. Seriously….thanks for all you do to keep our friend moving forward. Love :-} Sue and Muriel

I am looking forward to Dean's first laugh! Dean is a lucky man to have Bill and Linda. Hope you two have the support you need to keep Dean doing his therapy. And we are all so thankful you have invented a way to push Dean along in recovery. You both are amazing.
