Sundays are ususally slow, quiet days in the ICU unit. Today is no exception. Thank goodness. We've learned that the cause of some of Dean's distress is bacteria in the iv line in his neck. He has been put on "holiday,' meaning the iv ports have now been added to his arm and the one in his neck will be removed. After 24 hours, another port will be inserted through his vein in his arm - less susceptible to infection.
Apparently Dean slept quite a lot last night. You can tell by the look in his eyes. When he doesn't rest, his eyes have a haunted look. When I came in today he didn't have that look. Dean has been put back on the ventilator so that he can rest.
Dean wants water so badly. The doctor explained that the water is going directly into his stomach but he realizes that Dean's mouth is so dry. Doctor said today's goal is to remove the vent. Then he will consider water by mouth.
Bill and I find the ups and downs so stressful. It was good to learn that it was a bacterial infection and not rejection or any other kind of problem that was wearing Dean down. Fortunately, it was caught early. This pair of "doctors" have our own theory about trying to get Dean to do too much and that's why he regresses. Seems that after a day of physical therapy -trying to sit up and stand up, he is drained. Bill will address this with the doctor's.
We now begin week 9 of the transplant odyssey. Take care of yourselves! Linda

Dear Linda, Bill, and Dean
and Haverly and Frazier,
I can only imagine how stressful the balancing of ups and downs must be for you all! You are in my thoughts and prayers constantly.
I hope the good energy coming from everywhere and everyone who knows and loves Dean will continue to be
part of the restoration needed for
Dean's ongoing journey. Thank you for the updates and your love and support for each other and Dean.

The preciousness of sleep! It must be an elixir for Dean and then everyone benefits too. It's the little things (bacteria) that get us all down and its hard when something like that has such an effect. Glad to know there is a reason because there is so much unknown in this whole thing. I wish we could help you. Lots of love
Dear Linda, Bill, Haverly and Frazier,
We wanted you all to know that we continue to monitor Dean's progress. The emotional up's and down's must be very challenging. We think of you often and pray for Dean's recovery. Our love to all of you-Jan and Annette
Hi Everyone,
Linda, your reference to an odyssey is a good one. I am not sure any of you had the slightest idea where this journey would take you or that nine weeks later there would still be so many issues. You all are so courageous, strong, and determined. I know I have said this before but it bears repeating, please take care of yourselves. I think of you all everyday and send prayers of healing and strength. My love to each and everyone of you.
Bonnie
