Dean is fully awake now...although he should be resting. He just asked the respiratory nurse for a small coffee with a single shot. Unfortunately, he failed his swallow test yesterday so that means we are back to square one, no food or drink for a while.
Because of the pacemaker, movement of Dean's left arm is restricted so his physical therapy for his upper body will be curtailed for a few weeks. That will give us a chance to focus on strengthening his legs and feet and getting him to stand and sit.
Your zillions of thoughts and prayers came through. Thank you! Linda and Bill

Keep holding out the coffee as an incentive for Dean to practice swallowing. Won't that be a glorious day! We celebrate each success with great joy and appreciate your humor, spirit, and strength. We also honor the hard work and long days you have faced. Best to all.
Continued good thoughts and prayers for all of you.
Love Chip and Kathy
thanks for the post surgery update, and I know how much Dean wants that coffee! Thinking of you all with love, good thoughts, and prayers.

Dean, I'll tell you all about the pacemaker from experience. Although mine's a defibrillator, they're often the same device with different functions activated. No big deal...
Love,
Walter and Hugo
Such good news - hoping for Dean's sake he passes the swallow test soon so he can have that cup of coffee!

John and I are really glad that he's got the pacemaker in now. One day at a time. Our love and thoughts go out to all of you who are looking after him.

All of the ExEL faculty, staff, and other coaches are thinking of Dean and wishing him the very best.
And I wanted to give you a heads up that as requested by Sarah Alvord and Liz City, I will be sending the Coach Retreat meeting notes (from February 19 and 20) to Dean's email.
Yesterday I talked with John Goodlad about Dean's progress. He's been keeping up through friends' reports (he's not a computer user). He sends his best wishes to Dean and you all in this journey that calls for such courage, fortitude and love.
David and I send our love and good wishes, too.
